Understanding and Communicating

For the understanding and communicating unit of the SQA Scots Language Award, there are two main outcomes to pass.

1/ Demonstrate and understanding of straightforward texts in Scots

2/ Create and produce a communication in Scots for a specific purpose and audience.

The first one means you have to read, understand and analyse a piece of writing in Scots. You have to identify who the audience of the text would be and the purpose of the piece/poem/story. You have to identify the main ideas the writer is getting across and give details. And you have to show your understanding of Scots to explain the meaning of the text.

The second one means you have to create a piece of writing in Scots. You have to consider who it is for and what its purpose is, and you have to create it using a format and structure that is appropriate to the method of communication. You have to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of Scots.

Your teacher will choose texts to study and analyse, and will give you a task to create a piece of writing in Scots.
