Scots Lesson 10 The wither / widder

Weather (widder) - drookit, smirr, plooter, dingin doon, hope the rain bides aff, mochy, snell win, thunner plump, het. (Doric for beginners p.61-62, or online dictionaries)

Put words and meanings in your dictionary jotter. Write down any other Scots words you can think off about the weather - class discussion.

TASK 1 : Draw the thermometer on p. 62 and label it with the 7 temperature descriptions.

Now look at the weather powerpoint, developed by Mr Kennedy, Elgin. Make notes, to be used later for your own weather forecast.

Listen to the Wither forecast in Doric (north east Scots) and see if you can remember at least one rhyming phrase for the weather and the place it happens. You might have to listen a couple of times.

Fan ye've feenished, mak up a weather forecast using as mony o the weather words you hae learned. At least half a page to a page lang. Min an mention foo the widder micht affect fowk. If you can mak it rhyme - extra points!!

If you are doing the Scots Language Award, if your weather forecast is great quality, you could use it as your creative piece in Scots. It would be best to do both a written forecast, and to deliver it in front of a map - be the weather person!
