MTSS Tier 1: Universal instruction. Universal instruction is the largest tier and is a foundation for the framework of MTSS interventions. Tier 1 covers the high-quality classroom instruction (academic and social) that all students receive. Tier I is essentially all of the general practices teachers do in the classroom to meet students’ diverse learning needs. Solid, core instruction should be effective for at least 80% of students.
Things to remember:
Look for School or Grade Level trends to indicate areas of need within core behavior instruction.
Refer to discipline data to monitor progress in targeted areas.
Identify, communicate, adjust, and implement instruction as suggested to support areas of need within core behavior instruction and as indicated by data.
Things to consider:
Goals for behavior instruction
What are the fundamental goals for your students to learn about school wide expectations?
Instructional schedule and Lessons
What lessons will address your school behavior goals?
How often will lessons be taught?
Lessons should model, explain, and rehearse expectations.
Clear and consistent communication for students and staff
Communication happens at the beginning of the year, and is consistent throughout the school year.
Affirm when staff and students are meeting school goals and expectations.

Sown to Grow (Middle School): Sown to Grow Learning Strategies
Sown to Grown is a universal health screener used to support ARUSD middle school sites in systematically checking in on students' well being, sense of belonging, and inclusion at their schools. Research shows that students who feel belonging in their school communities have increased social emotional and academic outcomes. Sown to Grow has 4 main components:
An SEL (CA Healthy Kids Survey- like) survey
Weekly SEL check ins (universal health screener)
Weekly academic check ins
Stand alone SEL lessons by grade level
