Procedures for School Based Assessment

Assessment Tasks are submitted  tasks,  examinations, practicals and oral presentations.

2. Submission of Assessment Tasks

3. Return of Tasks

4Lateness

Late submission of an assessment task or non-attendance at an assessment event will attract a penalty unless the student is granted special consideration.  Special consideration must be applied for and submitted within two days of returning to school.

The penalty for late submission of an assessment task is:

DAYS LATE PENALTY

One day late 10% of the value of the task.

Two days late 0% of the value of the task.

Three or more days late 100% of the value of the task.

This will apply to all submitted tasks.

All assessment tasks must be completed, regardless of lateness, in order to satisfy the requirements of the course.  Students who do not complete assessment tasks by the due date and have not been granted special consideration, will be issued an ‘N’ Warning Letter.

5. Special Consideration

A Special Consideration Request Form needs to be completed by a student who has missed an assessment task or assessment event due to extenuating circumstances.  The Request for Special Consideration form is available from the Curriculum Coordinator.  It must be completed in full, with signatures of parents and include Supporting Documentary Evidence (for example, a Doctor’s certificate) before submission to the Curriculum Coordinator.  Requests for Special Consideration must be submitted prior to the due date of the assessment task: in case of student absence or misadventure, within two days of the student’s return to school.

Do not assume Special Consideration will automatically be granted.  Students will still be expected to submit or complete the outstanding task as soon as possible, regardless of the outcome of the application for special consideration.

Approved Special Consideration for an assessment task may require an estimate to be calculated, based upon other Assessment Tasks completed by the student throughout the course.  The estimated mark is calculated to preserve the student’s relative rank within the course, without advantage nor disadvantage when compared to all other students in that course.

5.1 Illness

A student who is unable to attend school on the day of an assessment task may submit a Request for Special Consideration form, supported by a Doctor's Certificate.  The doctor must have seen the student and signed the Certificate either on, or prior to, the date of the task.  The certificate should state that the student is unfit to attend school for a continuous period from the date of the visit to the date of the task.  Backdated Doctor’s Certificates will not be accepted.  It is always the student’s responsibility for correct submission of all required documents.  Do not rely on another student to complete the Special Consideration Request Form on your behalf.

5.2  Misadventure / Special Circumstances

A student who is unable to attend school, or submit an assessment task, on the due date for reasons other than illness may submit a Request for Special Consideration.  If Special Consideration is granted, no penalties will apply.

5.3  Suspension and Assessment Tasks

If a student is suspended from normal classes during a period when an Assessment Task is due, they will be required to attend school (without wearing school uniform) between 9 and 10 am to submit any HAND IN task to the Assistant Principal.

In the case of a practical or oral presentation, the Assistant Principal will make arrangements with the KLA teacher for the student to complete this Assessment on the students return from suspension.

5.4  Eligibility for Special Consideration

The student’s eligibility for Special Consideration will be determined by the Principal and Assistant Principal.  They will determine the conditions under which the assessment will take place.  The student will be informed of their decision by the Assistant Principal .

Students who are deemed to have a valid reason for not attending/submitting an assessment on the due date may be given:

6. Warning of Non-Completion of a Stage 5 Course

Any student that has submitted a task that is 3 or more days late, makes a non-serious attempt at, or has submitted a task deemed to be seeking an unfair advantage, will be awarded a zero mark for that task. The KLA teacher responsible for that subject will, in accordance with NESA requirements, notify students and parents by email or by phone.

It is vital that the student attend to the “Action” as stated in the Warning letter within the time allocated in order to avoid subsequent letters being issued and a Non-Completion of a course determined.  This letter should be signed by the parent(s) and returned to the subject teacher concerned.

Warning letters are issued and zero marks are awarded in the following circumstances:

6.1     Malpractice / Plagiarism

Throughout the assessment process, the highest level of integrity and honesty is required.  Failure to meet this requirement may limit a student’s marks and jeopardise their completion of Stage 5.

A student’s mark / grade is determined by the quality of the work produced by the student only.  Any take-home assessment task or submitted work must formally acknowledge any words, ideas, designs or workmanship of others used in producing the work.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all unacknowledged work is genuinely their own.

Malpractice / Plagiarism is any activity undertaken by a student that allows them to gain an unfair advantage over others. It includes, but is not limited to:

Students are encouraged to incorporate research from a variety of sources but sources must be clearly acknowledged through an annotated bibliography and/or footnotes.  Failure to acknowledge such sources, constitutes plagiarism.  Any student who commits plagiarism in an assessment task may receive a zero for that task and will be required to resubmit the task.

Technology failure is not an acceptable excuse for the late submission of a task. Students are encouraged to       keep draft copies and notes related to assessment tasks which must be submitted in the event of technology   failure.  These will be regarded as final assessment submission.

7.  Student Appeals

In the event of a student feeling that the process of assessment as outlined in this policy has not been correctly followed or that they have been disadvantaged as a result of the organisation of the assessment task or event, the student has a right of appeal.  Students are encouraged to lodge their appeal as close as possible to the time of the assessment event or within 24 hours of the return of the task.  Students are discouraged from waiting until they receive their results from the task before lodging an appeal.

Appeals should be made initially to the relevant KLA teacher.  A further appeal can be made to the Secondary Leader of Curriculum, if the student is not satisfied with the outcome of the process or needs further clarification.  Students will then be informed if a written appeal is required and how this should be structured.
