Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel and arch of the foot. 

It is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. 

The plantar fascia helps to support the arch of the foot and absorb shock when walking or running.

Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms

• Stiffness in the foot

• Tenderness in the heel or arch of the foot

• Pain that gets worse with activity and improves with rest

• A burning or aching sensation in the heel

• A sharp pain when you first put weight on your foot in the morning

Plantar Fasciitis Relief

• Orthotics. Custom-made or over-the-counter orthotics can help to support the arch of the foot and reduce stress on the plantar fascia.

• Rest. The first step in treating plantar fasciitis is to rest the foot and avoid activities that make the pain worse.

• Ice. Applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time can help to reduce inflammation and pain.

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

• The most effective way to resolve this condition is to align the joints of the rearfoot and midfoot using a custom orthotic.  This reduces pronation or collapse of the foot.   

• When these joints are aligned, then the bone structure is taking the stress of body weight instead of the flexor muscles and plantar fascia.

• They are more expensive than prefabricated orthotics, but they are also more likely to provide relief from plantar fasciitis pain.

• Plantar fascia pain is the root cause of heel pain.    In addition many times the bursa sac under the heel becomes part of the pain syndrome.
