Custom Bioengineered Orthotics need perodic evaluations and possible adjustments over time as load mechanics change
Everything changes as we age, our eye visualization changes, our weight changes, there are adaptive and progressive neurological and musculoskeletal changes that affect our standing and walking. Footwear, or shoe types can also alter our cyclic load mechanics.
As our eyes change, the eye doctor will examine our eyes and make changes to the lenses to our glasses to improve our vision. So too, as load mechanics change, the geometry of our feet and limbs need to change to keep up with the demands on our feet. Whether it be due to shoes, terrain, trauma, surgery, we must always keep tight control on load mechanics. Custom Orthotics are a three dimensional device that aligns joints and prevents abnormal motion that adversely affects the foot, knee hip, and spine. Annual or semiannual orthotic evaluations are highly recommended. If the orthotics are not controlling joint positioning and function well enough, the orthotics can be adjusted to improve the orthotics function. The problem I see as a retired Podiatric physician is that there are patients that think that if the orthotics feels ok, it must be working ok. That is not the case. If orthotics are not adjusted to keep up with the current demands on the foot and limb, abnormal stress can start causing adverse load and as a result begin the process of accelerating load bearing joint stress and disease such as degenerative osteoarthritis.
