Elementary

Elementary social studies includes a broad range of subjects designed to build students' historical thinking skills, strengthen their social emotional understandings, and increase their literacy. General curriculum topics include:

  • Kindergarten: Moving around our world including locations, communities and their needs, directions, and maps

  • First grade: Exploring the world and diversity in our communities locally and globally

  • Second grade: Exploring the global community and comparing it to Arlington and its sister cities in Japan and El Salvador

  • Third grade: Exploring local history in Arlington and Massachusetts and how history informs the present

  • Fourth grade: Analyzing how the United States' history shapes its present

  • Fifth grade: Analyzing major moments in early United States history and their connections to today
