ELEMENTARY SCIENCE

In kindergarten, the Arlington Public Schools have adopted Tools of the Mind science program. Children explore form and function in science activities––investigating differences in teeth, feet, animal tracks, camouflage and adaptation in multiple habitats. They learn about the arctic tundra, savannahs, rainforests, the layers of the ocean, and the moon, and develop all the math skills in the Common Core in games designed to build academic, executive functions and self-regulation skills at the same time.

Arlington Public Schools have adopted the the Full Option Science System (FOSS) curriculum in grades 1 - 5. Every school year, students complete one unit in each of the following areas: physical science, earth science, and life science. These science units focus on student inquiry, reading scientific texts, and writing in science notebooks. Arlington teachers are excited to be working with this curriculum, and students have been enjoying the hands-on approach of FOSS.
