Lesson 2.1: Introduction to Matter

Learning Goals:

By the end of this lesson, I will be able to:

• answer, “What is an atom?”

• name and identify the different models of the scientific theory of atoms.

• define the atomic number and the atomic mass number of an element.

• represent the atomic structure of an element using electronic configuration and dot and cross diagrams.

Success Criteria:

1. I can draw the structure of an atom and label its parts.

2. I can understand the development of the model of an atom over time, and the contribution of various scientists towards it.

3. I can define the atomic number and atomic mass number of an element and calculate the number of protons, electrons and neutrons.

4. I can represent the atomic structure of an element using electronic configuration and dot and cross diagrams.
