In this Unit students will develop an understanding of the structure of an element which allows us to predict its physical and chemical properties. Every element has predictable chemical and physical properties determined by its structure. Elements are organized in the periodic table which has characteristic trends that help determine the properties of an element.

By the end of this unit, Students will be able to:

  • define the atomic number and the atomic mass number of an element. (B2)

  • represent the atomic structure of an element using electronic configuration and dot and cross diagrams. (B2)

  • define isotopes and radioisotopes (B2)

  • calculate average atomic mass. (B2)

  • understand how anions and cations are formed. (B2)

  • explain the organization of the periodic table (B3)

    • periods

    • families and their properties

    • metals/non metals and metalloids

  • explain the trends of the periodic table (B3)

    • atomic size/ atomic radius

    • ionization energy

    • electron affinity

    • electronegativity
