Introducing Knox- AMS School Facility Dog
This summer, AMS staff is preparing to welcome the arrival of the newest member of our school community, Knox, our School Facility Dog. Knox has received years of intensive training through The Ability Center Assistance Dogs Program, including “on the job” training with a local school before being officially placed with our school. School Facility Dogs offer a range of benefits to the school community including but not limited to motivating students, reducing stress and anxiety, increasing academic achievement, supporting social interactions and providing an experience that leads to positive attitudes towards learning. We are excited to offer a new program that will help meet the needs of our students and staff through additional support in the areas of academics, social-emotional learning and mental health.
Knox will always be on a leash and will only visit with students and staff when given permission to interact. Additionally, we will be establishing dog-friendly and dog-free zones throughout our building. Families that have disclosed student allergies to pets/animals on Final Forms will be contacted prior to the start of the school year in order to discuss how students’ needs will be met in order to provide the best experience for everyone. We will prepare students for the arrival of Knox at the beginning of the school year!
If you have any questions about the School Facility Dog program, please feel free to contact Mr. Shields mshields@archboldschools.org
