Chameleon

By Sierra Tufts-Sicard

You placed me on the chelone

and told me to be pink—so i was

i was denied the right to vote

so i left the choices to You

i was denied the right to work

so i raised the family

You placed me on the jessamine

and told me to be yellow—

“No”

you place me on the periwinkle

and to tell me to be blue—I turn green

I am paid less than you

so I protest and rally

you place me on the alstroemeria

and tell me to be orange—I turn yellow

I am attacked and assaulted

so I learn to defend

the snake has chosen its prey

but little does he know

so has the Chameleon
