From My Father's Point of View

i don’t understand

why you won’t stay home

until you’re at least 26.

i know i’m an asshole,

but i think i tried my best.

i remember when you danced on my toes

at the father-daughter dance

and then left me and the other dads

to mingle while you went off with your friends

shoes-off, carefree,

laughter like chiming bells.

a picture is worth a thousand words

so i send you a picture of the dog,

that means “i love you.”

i know i’m an asshole,

but i cherish the times

when we meet in the middle

a venn diagram intersection of love.
