The Night i plucked the stars from the sky

Artwork by Carly Maloney

I had plucked the stars

From the sky

And kept them hidden,

Bound in fabric,

And dimmed

In my left pocket

Never to be seen by me

Again

You were a gardener;

Growing stalks of moonlight

That reached from sky to soil

And trees with thick trunks made of night

And leaves formed by clouds

Stained by sunsets

You and I–

We fell in love

On a warm summer evening

Surrounded by the fruits

Of your labor

And my starless sky,

Which you said you loved regardless

Of its lightless nature

When you kissed my hand

I realized that

If I ever am to die

I would want them to gift you

A piece of me,

Any piece,

So that you may replant it

And let our memory

Sprout

From our tilled,

Love-filled land

I want them to tell

The generations

That linger upon this farmland

Once we fall asleep for eternity

In the warm embrace of midnight,

Our arms wrapped around

One another,

That I had plucked the stars

From the sky

And you replanted them

With my tears,

Because you loved me
