The term has been going really well. We have finally completed our agamographs, and are really proud of our achievement. They ended up being a lot trickier than we expected. Some of these are on display in the office and the others are in the classroom.
For maths we have continued to learn about fractions. Some groups have been learning about equivalent fractions, others about improper fractions and mixed numbers.
In inquiry we are enjoying our focus on migration. Over the past two weeks we have thought about how ancient polynesion people used stars, currents, birds and whales to navigate. We have also begun to explore the different styles of waka.
The year 6's had an awesome time at the marae. Even though the weather wasn't great we still had a fantastic experience. We got to share our pepeha (which was a little scary!) with everyone, explore local stories and practice drawing maori patterns.
We have had a great start to Term 2. Some of our highlights have been buddy time, PE, the writing project and finishing off our agamograph art.
The writing project is lots of fun. The students have chosen one of three groups; fantasy, choose your own adventure or wonder project. Each group is doing different literacy activities based around video games, science, engineering and more! Ask your child which group they are in and get them to tell you some of the fun things they have been doing.
Take a look at our amazing camp newspaper!
We have had an awesome couple of weeks at school. Read in to find out what has been happening:
Literacy: we are going to be creating agamographs. These are optical illusions. We can't wait to share them with you when they're done! Check out how to make one in the video below.
Wonder: we have finished this book now! We all really enjoyed the ending. Auggie got a standing ovation and special award.
We have had an awesome couple of weeks at school. Read in to find out what has been happening:
iBike: the Year 5's did iBike! They had lots of fun learning different biking skills and how to check whether their helmet is safe or not.
Buddy Class: we have had our first buddy class session. We are buddied with Huarapa and go read to them on Friday afternoons for 20 mins.
Mandarin: we have learnt about red envelopes (hóng bāo) and how to draw chinese new year dragons. Check out our pictures below to see them!
Our highlights this week are:
First aid training; we put people in the recovery position. Even Whaea Sam!
Mandarin: We enjoyed learning how to greet our teacher. Ask me how! We also played a fun online game.
Release Day: We got to have Whaea Andrea, Whaea Megan and Whaea Annabel come to our class and teach science, art and drama. It was a lot of fun and a very big day.
Wonder update: Jack doesn't know why Auggie is mad at him and is trying to figure it out. We have read Auggie, Via and Summer's perspective.
Now we are looking forward to camp!
We have had our second week at school. Our highlights this week were:
Banqer: we got to 'play' a game about interest and loans. We chose all the right answers the first time, then played again with only choosing the wrong answers. Our favourite option was 'RUN AWAY!". He had to pay $420,000 back, it is better to pay on time!
We had a new student join us from Napier, Eva! Welcome to her and her whānau.
Self portraits: we finished our self portraits. These look great and will be shared with you on Hero soon.
Wonder update: Jack and Auggie have had a falling out. During lunch Auggie made a new friend, Summer. They created the 'summer table', but everone can sit with them if they're nice. We are now reading from Via's (Auggie's sister) point of view.
We started back at school this week. Some of our highlights were:
Keyhole art: we got to use pastels to create the lock, then we used colour pencils to make a background showing a scene from our holidays. Check out some of our work in the picture carousel.
Banqer: we are using banqer to learn about money. This week we got to apply for jobs. We had to write a cover letter and will find out which jobs we got on Monday!
Empire: Maxi won our first game of empire. Ask me how to play!
Wonder: we have started to read our ako novel called Wonder. August is the main character and he looks different to everyone else, he has had 27 surgeries and is starting school for the first time at 10 years old. So far another character appears to be a bit of a bully.
