All service-learning courses need to have the Academic Service-Learning Indicator (ASL) applied to the course so that it appears with the course in the official system so students receive the service credits. There are two ways the ASL Indicator can be applied to courses.
Regular Course Scheduling: During the regular course scheduling process, the ASL Indicator can be included in the spreadsheet list of courses submitted for each degree program. There is a "ASL" column to mark for any service learning course.
Adding/Removing with Form Submission: To add or remove the Service-Learning (ASL) indicator, please email servicelearning@apu.edu. The Academic Service-Learning team will handle the submission of the Registration Form on behalf of the professor.
Each course needs to have a submitted SL Course Plan Form 3 months prior to the start of the term. Submitting this form is what triggers APU to provide the necessary Student Agreement Forms, orientations, and connections to the many wonderful community partners of the university.
Chapel Days/Times: If you feel you have special circumstances with your particular project (representation at project, chapel absence requests, etc.), be sure you enter all details into your Course Plan Form.
ASL Reflected in Syllabus
A.) SLOs - Related student learning outcomes have been identified in course syllabus
B.) Project Description - included in syllabus for students to know what they are expected of
C.) Dates - Service-learning project required participation dates for students have been included in course syllabus
D.) Alternate Assignment - Be prepared to provide an alternate assignment (off-campus/unpaid) for any student(s) with special circumstances or required accommodation needs that make the project unavailable for them to complete
ASL Orientation Scheduled
Schedule an exact class date where you will provide the required APU Service-Learning orientation. Service-Learning Coordinators provides the orientation for you either by an in person presentation (a prerecorded video option might be available if there are extraordinary conditions). Integrating the APU ASL Orientation information into the course canvas site is a great way to ensure all students have access to the information shared throughout the service project to be referred back to.
Students Sign Student Agreement Forms
The Service-Learning Coordinator will provide the required Student Agreement Forms for you. Schedule an exact class date where you will have all students sign and submit the form to ensure the safety and coverage for you, your students, and the community partner you are working with. Adding this to the orientation time works out well to be done together. Integrating the form into the course canvas site as an assignment is a great way to ensure all students complete this legal step prior to the start of your project.
Any student graduating the same term as your ASL course will need to have their ASL credits posted much earlier than other students. Any student graduating is told to submit an "early clearance form" for their professors to sign stating they are in good standing to complete the credits so that they can participate in commencement. Option: Professors can email senior early clearance names to servicelearning@apu.edu with the names and number of ASL credits of any graduating seniors in your class that need credits posted earlier than other students.
*Nursing Courses: As of Fall 2025, the ASL team will coordinate senior clearances with the faculty contact for Nursing. Seniors are not required to submit this form since the faculty will send this.
As soon as your service project is complete, have all students submit an APU Service-Learning Project Reflection Form. This form is provided by CCEL Academic Service-Learning. Ensure the link is circulated to all students and is submitted by each student. CCEL Academic Service-Learning will provide a summary document of the responses to help make improvements for future service projects and the document is also available to be used with course information to university leadership in program highlights, etc.
Our hope is that all students will receive all intended ASL credits. However, sometimes a student was not able to participate for a variety of reasons and therefore should not receive the credits or just partial credits. CCEL Academic Service-Learning emails professors a roster list of their class and professors need to enter in the amount of credits that should be applied for each student prior to the end of the term. Once received, CCEL Service Learning will take care of posting the credits to student accounts.
