The purpose of the research team requirement is to provide PhD students with exposure to research opportunities, methodologies, and topics that might equip them for continued work on their dissertation. Students may be on different teams each year, and may choose a team based on the opportunity to work with a particular faculty member or focus on a particular topic of interest to them. PhD students are required to participate on a team and to enroll in HED 760 for 1 unit each term for their second and third years of coursework, for a total of 4 units before graduation. Each team experience may be quite different from one another, as some teams are working on longitudinal projects such that joining their team means joining research that is in progress. If you have questions about any research team, please contact the faculty leader directly
First-year doctoral students are eligible to apply for an opening on any of the research teams listed. Each team lasts one academic year, with teams at varying stages of the research process. Students returning for their third year who wish to continue on the same team are typically given priority for available slots.
Applications open on January 3, 2022. Applications are due by March 15, 2022. The composition of the teams will be announced by April 8, 2022. Students are asked to select two teams in which they are interested, with the faculty then placing students on teams according to strengths, interests, skills, and group dynamics.
For all research teams, students who present at a conference may have their travel costs defrayed by up to $500 each, if they apply and are approved by the Office of Research at APU. Learn More. Click below to read an overview of all research teams.
