Announcing the Laurie Schreiner Endowed Scholarship:
A Bridge to New Knowledge, Practice, and Justice in Higher Education
Dear Doctoral Higher Education Friends and Alumni,
Warm greetings from the faculty and staff in APU’s Department of Higher Education! Much growth and encouraging accomplishments by our students, alumni, and faculty have been occurring in recent years, among them a very successful July 20, 2019 “Critical Issues in Higher Education” half-day seminar during which we celebrated 20 years of offering higher education doctorates at APU! The enclosed booklet contains a fascinating overview of how the two doctoral programs in our department (the EdD in Higher Education Leadership and the PhD in Higher Education) have developed. Dr. Dennis Sheridan, who guided the early design and implementation of the EdD, was recognized and thanked for his 25 years of service at APU. These two programs have now prepared over 150 graduates to make significant contributions in various career paths throughout our field.
As pictured in the first several pages of the booklet, our faculty decided during this 20th anniversary year to honor the impressive leadership of Dr. Laurie Schreiner, long-serving chair of the Department of Higher Education, by asking her to speak to the topic “The Future of Doctoral Higher Education: Preparing to Thrive.” If you would like to receive a copy of the paper she presented, please e-mail: klongman@apu.edu In addition, four of our graduates offered responses from a variety of perspectives.
Near the back of the booklet, you will also see the photos of our past “Critical Issues” speakers--representing some of the most significant thought leaders in our field. Next year’s keynoter will be Dr. Gina Garcia, author of the newly released book Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges & universities. July 18, 2020 is the date, and you’re invited!
As a surprise to Dr. Schreiner, we also celebrated the launch of the Laurie Schreiner Endowed Scholarship, which will generate funds to support doctoral higher education students (both EdD and PhD) who are facing significant financial struggles as they strive to complete their doctoral work. As you know, since 2002, Laurie has chaired or been a member of dozens of dissertations, taught courses on student success and teaching/learning, developed a research agenda around the concept of thriving, and continued to have a significant presence through publishing and in our professional organizations.
Our goal is to increase the scholarship fund from $25,000 toward $50,000 as quickly as possible to help relieve some of the financial stress various students are facing.
