We believe in a STEM learning culture: Standard Five. We have implemented embedding STEM speakers, Tweeting out STEM activities, integrating STEM nights, and conducting a Saturday School to improve mathematics.
We have linked the Saturday School curriculum and provided an overview of our Do the Math remediation program and with student information redacted. In the first semester, the students averaged over 8 points of growth. According to MAP, this is what they would average for one year.
Our school also has a rooftop garden, where we house two beehives. Our environmental education teacher can use this space for Place-Based Education (PBE). PBE emphasizes learning through participation in service projects for the local school and/or community. Our students have used the garden as a space to plant and raise food for the homeless, conduct a honey sale to raise money for the end of the year field trip using our local high school's honey and mint from our garden, raise and release butterflies to pollinate our school plants, and create makerspace projects like a squash trellis to solve help our squash grow. There is also a compost bin where students compost and learn about soil.
We have also integrated a sun safety curriculum funded by the PTO, to raise awareness of the dangers of skin cancer. The parents and students worked together on this project to get the word out to the community.
Math is about more than finding the correct answer. It's about using numerical reasoning to find the best strategy for solving a problem. Created by Marilyn Burns, one of America's most trusted math educators, and a team of master educators, Do The Math® provides flexible, classroom-tested instruction for building numerical reasoning and confidence. Whether used for core instruction in numerical reasoning, pull-out intervention, or summer school settings, Do The Math provides effective instruction at any elementary grade level.
