We believe in integrated STEM learning experiences: Standard Eleven. Therefore, we have implemented STEM in many areas of our school, including Reading, Writing, Gifted and Talented, Media Center, Art, Spanish, Physical Education, Music and an Environmental Science Class.
In these special area classes, the teachers are doing the following:
Asking students to address real-world problems
Incorporating science and math
Involving students in teamwork
Allowing multiple approaches and different possible solutions for a problem
Using an inquiry-based teaching and learning approach
Involving innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity
Including the construction of a process or prototype in all subjects
Students are using an app called Flat.io to write music for themselves to play on their Band or Orchestra instrument, and Chorus students are writing short drills to sing using notation and Kodaly solfege hand signals.
Students then were invited to play their own composition using Flipgrid--Using technology to create and to share their creations. In addition to the creative habits they are developing, students are also working specifically on notes they are learning in Band and Orchestra and matching up singing pitches with hand signals, so the technology supports Instrumental and Choral Music as well as GSE Standards in General Music.
