My name is Suzanne Everett, I am so excited to be working with each one of you this year! I am entering my 11th year teaching New Mexico History at James Monroe and 7th year teaching AVID. I grew up in a small town in Texas (Yes, I say y'all and will always be a Texas girl at heart.) and moved to Albuquerque in the middle of my Sophomore year of High School. I played the Tenor Saxophone in La Cueva's Marching and Concert Bands and loved every minute of it! I then went against family tradition of becoming an NMSU Aggie and instead became a Lobo, earning a Bachelors of Communication and Journalism and Masters of Education from the University of New Mexico. GO LOBOS!! While at UNM I studied abroad at the Universidad de Palermo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This was by far one of the most rewarding and adventurous experiences of my life! I love to travel and learn about different places and cultures around the world and this provided me with an opportunity to do both. I then came home, graduated, and worked at the University for a number of years before realizing my passion was in the classroom, teaching Middle School. They're a silly bunch but I love them!
My husband's name is Jason and we have 2 fur babies, Aspen and Finley, and yes, we are "those" crazy puppy parents.
My goal is to teach my students to believe in themselves through the study of History and AVID strategies. I hope to make this a fun and informative year in a classroom environment based upon mutual respect and promoting positive learning. I believe all students are an integral part of our classroom community, each bringing their own experiences, culture, learning styles, ideas, and beliefs. As a teacher I feel it is important to incorporate these into a rigorous curriculum while making it relevant and adapting to the needs of individuals in the classroom. Through the building of relationships, I strive to create a space where students feel valued and safe to ask questions, pursue wonderings, and support one another.
