ELA
We will be finishing reading our book study book holes the next two weeks. During which 4th and 5th graders will continue to practice summarizing, answering questions using text evidence, make inferences using text evidence, using context clues to understand unfamiliar words and phrases, analyze characters and compare and contrast characters.
Grammar we are practicing short and long vowel sounds, digraphs, diphthongs, grammar related to quotes and verb tenses.
Writing we have practiced many skills related back to narrative writing. This first week of September kids will begin brainstorming their own narrative story and writing them including elements of characters such as; showing traits through actions and dialogue, being able to describe the settings importance to a story, how characters respond to a setting and describing settings with concrete and sensory details.
4th Math
4th begins by continuing to practice adding using the standard algorithm up to hundred thousands and having multiple addends at once. When finished 4th graders will be solving subtraction problems involving decomposing using the standard algorithm. When subtraction is finished we will be having our first unit test covering; Place Value, Comparing Numbers, Rounding, Adding using standard algorithm and Subtracting using the standard algorithm.
At the end of the month fourth graders will branch into multiplication where we cover multiplication as a comparison between numbers, for example saying that 48 is 6 times as much as 8. Then going into solving multiplication and division word problems and being able to differentiate between which math operation to use.
5th Math
5th graders are currently working on solving multiplication problems with 4 digit numbers multiplied with 2 digit numbers using the standard algorithm. When finished we will work on solving 4 digit by 2 digit division problems. We will look at this problems using partial quotients as well as using long division to solve. When finished with division we will have our first unit test covering; finding volume, and solving multiplication and division problems.
At the end of the month fifth graders will be looking at decimals and understanding their relative size compared to whole numbers. Afterwards we will be going over powers of ten and how they can be used on decimals as well as whole numbers.
Science
For Science we are wrapping up chemistry this first week of September and taking our unit test on Friday the 8th.
Social Studies
We will begin our Social studies unit on Geography. We will have many small focuses during this unit including; types of maps, lines of latitude and longitude, geographical features, continents, countries and states and the regions of America.
