A few quick things to try at home before requesting help.
🪫Charge Device
Make sure the device is not dead. Often this solves most issues! When plugged in, is the light. . .
🧡Orange? Charging (wait 10 minutes then try again)
🤍White: Charged + ready
❌No Light: Try different charger or outlet to determine damage (faulty device or faulty charger?)
🔁Restart/Power Cycle
The simplest fix; close everything and try a power cycle:
Press and hold the power button until the screen goes dark and all keyboard lights turn completely off
Press power button again until device reboots
🔐Reset a Student Password
Once a student fails to login to their device more than 3 times, they will need their password reset.
If the student is at home, they can change it themselves (on a different device) HERE.
Any teacher on campus can reset a student password.
Make sure you are on the APS main wifi
Requirements: Must include 3 or more capital letters, lower case letters, numbers, or special characters. May NOT include the student's first or last name.
Student will need to restart their device before logging in with the new password
🫧Universal Fix: Power Wash
Sometimes referred to as a "factory reset" or "developer mode"
Plug in device so it doesn't die mid-wash
Log out of Chromebook
Press and hold Esc + Refresh + Power Button
Screen will turn dark; just wait a few seconds for it to return. You should see a message about inserting a recovery USB memory card (do not do this)
Press Control + D
This will put you in Developer Mode. Just press the Enter button until it reboots (2-3 times)
After a few seconds, it should restart the device and prompt you to login
Connect to APS Guest on the initial login or it will not work
🌙Screen Dark/Won't Turn On
Check the screen brightness:
Press the button with the sunshine icon. Make sure it is turned up.
Hard reset:
Hold the Refresh + Power button for 10 seconds
Close the lid and wait 1 minute
Open and turn on
🍪Clear Cache/Cookies/Browsing History
Try this if the device is unusually slow. Pair this with a Device Update.
Open Google Chrome Browser
Click three dots in the top right corner to open menu
Select "More Tools"
Select "Clear Browsing Data"
Select the time frame of "All Time"
Check the following 3 boxes: Browsing History, Cookies, Cached images/files
Select Clear Data"
♻️Update Chrome
A slow Chromebook might need to be updated. They automatically update when they are turned ON (if a student never let's their device die and never powers it off, then it might not update on schedule. It will require a manual update:
Log in and connect to wifi
Open menu by clicking the clock in the bottom right corner
Select the Gear icon to open the Settings
Select About Chrome OS
Select Check for Updates. It might take a few minutes, so just leave it on the screen, plugged in
Once done updating, restart the device
⌨️Keyboard Typing Incorrectly
Check Accessibility Settings
Click on the clock menu in the lower right corner
Make sure the keyboard is set to English (US)
If that doesn't work: Power Wash it
🔎Fix Zoom
To Reset: Press Control + Zero
Zoom In: Control + Plus Sign
Zoom Out: Control + Minus Sign
💸Fees for Damage/Repairs
If you notice damage to a student's device that makes it difficult for them to use it, please request help
If you would like to add context about damage to a student's device, please email Lillian Manfredi or admin.
Fees will be issued if (1) gross negligence is proven, (2) multiple missing keys are removed, (3) deep scratches and/or cracks are apparent, (4) screen is damaged, and/or (5) there is liquid damage.
The district will not charge for accidental damage or normal wear and tear from proper use.
All fees will be determined by admin and communicated through ParentVUE.
