I was inspired to write this poem after reading George Ella Lyon's poem anthology, Many-Storied House. Reading Lyon's poems flooded my mind with memories of growing up in the little yellow house on Cave Creek Road. One of my favorite things about our house was the wood stove my dad built in living room. I loved sitting in front of the fire on a snowy day and cooking on it when our electricity went out. My sister and I always felt like it was an adventure when this happened. As I was writing this, I had many conversations with my mom as we recounted stories that happened around that old wood stove. I had forgotten about my sister breaking her teeth and I never knew that my brother had helped my dad lay the brickwork. One of the biggest regrets my mom has is not taking that wood stove with her when she sold the house. I told her that we all still have all the memories of sitting around that stove with family and no one can take that away from us.
