~from Brown Angels: An Album of Pictures and Verse by Walter Dean Myers
Reflection:
This is after Walter Dean Myers' beautiful poem "Love That Boy". I immediately knew after reading his poem that I wanted to write a piece about the two most important people in my life, my kiddos. This is a poem that I think I will come back to and continue to work on. I'm still not happy with the last stanza, but I can't quite figure out what it is that I want to do differently. As I was writing this, I thought about how close my siblings and I are and how nice it is to have them to depend and lean on. I hope for Hazel and Henry they can find they can do that in the future at that is what I was trying to convey in the last lines.
It was fun to write because all I could keep thinking about is how much I love them and how much they love each other. Hazel is weary of people she doesn't know, but she lights up as soon as her brother walks in the room. Henry doesn't know a stranger and is so silly. I love that they are both so young and I can already tell how different their unique personalities are. I've found that they are truly one of my biggest inspirations for writing. My notebook is filled with little stories and sayings (of Henry's) that I want to have as keepsakes for them to read when they are older.
