College Options, Resources, & Education
Improving postsecondary enrollment requires a well-rounded, systematic approach that includes not only traditional academics but also education about the postsecondary access process. The parts of this process can be thought of in much the same way as we think about traditional education. We must teach the content and skills necessary for students to complete all the tasks associated with the process. We must teach relevance: the “why?”. We must connect with our students so they know we have their best interests at heart. The final exam comes not in the form of a test, but in the successful completion of tasks: application, financial aid, entry. We at Appalachian GEAR UP have developed a comprehensive postsecondary access system called C.O.R.E: College Options, Readiness, and Education.
What do students/parents need to know before they perform a task or make decisions?
How do we support students with the tasks through the process of application and enrollment?
How do we build buy-in?
