Read excerpt from A Tale for the Time Being
The novel is told by two narrators-Naoko and Ruth. In this section, Naoko is in Japan spending the summer with her grandmother, Jiko who is Nao's 104-year-old great-grandmother. Nao describes her as an anarchist-feminist Buddhist nun. In this scene, the two go on an outing for the day and stop at a convenience store. Out front is a gang of girls looking for trouble. Nao is terrified since she has been bullied horribly before, but Nao is unfazed by the girls.Â
