Your final grade is ultimately earned based on the number of assignments submitted as well as meeting or exceeding the expectations for each category type:
Chapter Quizzes (25%)
Tutorial Worksheets (25%)
Class Activities (25%)
Reflection Assignments (25%)
The pie graph above illustrates how each of the above categories has the same influence on your grade as the other.
I realize that if you are like most community college students, you also have other commitments in your life that may interfere with your ability to be successful in my class. However in order to demonstrate that you have achieved the student learning outcomes & objectives, each week you can expect to:
watch online video tutorials reviewing the textbook and study guides.
participate in class activities during each in-person class session.
read and review 1 textbook chapter each week
submit 4 reflection assignments.
It is impossible for me to tell you how much time it will take to do all of that, except for the in-person commitment, which is 1.5 hours twice a week, for a total of 3 hours in-person each week. How much time it will take you to do everything else really depends on personal factors such as reading speed, reading fluency, note taking ability, and learning strategies. In addition there are external factors such as your ability to find a distraction free environment, setting aside time to work on learning, family responsibilities, jobs, etc.
Having said all that, it would be reasonable to expect to spend up to 8 hours on this class, which would be considered standard for a 3 unit class. But don't let that number scare you because as I said, there are many factors that influence how much time outside of class you will spend learning. I just want to make it clear that this is more than just a "come to class and you'll be fine" type of class, which it is not. But I promise I have done my best to make every minute you invest into my class an important and helpful one - in other words, I do not prescribe "busy work" because I know you are already busy!
If something comes up that is interfering with your ability to meet these course expectations, please reach out to me as early as possible so that we can work together to keep you on your academic journey and moving toward your academic goals in my class.

No student wants to fail a class, but I recognize that there are many factors that can, and do, interfere in your lives. I have a lot of flexibility built into my class in hopes to offset these factors. If you attend class regularly, submit most of the required assignments, and use the resources posted to help you be successful, you will pass my class. Here are a few reasons why students don't:
Did not submit the minimum amount of work in all of the grade categories.
Did not meet expectations in most of the grade categories.
Did not watch the weekly video tutorials.
Did not regularly attend class.
Did not submit reflections.
If at any time you are struggling in my class, please reach out to me and we can hopefully discuss the best path forward.
I realize that most of you will be unfamiliar with the type of grading I am using in my class, or any alternate grading scheme that deviates from the traditional one. However I am committed to ensuring that you will always be able to know exactly how well you are doing or what grade you have in my class, thus there are a variety of ways to do that:
