You may have heard that I have high expectations of students - facts! However I also have high expectations of myself, after all it wouldn't be fair to expect more from you than I do of myself. So, I hope after reading this part of the syllabus that you have a clear understanding of these expectations, which will make our time together much more pleasant and productive!

My preferred method of communication is through the Canvas Inbox because it provides both of us a digital record to help reduce any miscommunication or misunderstanding. However I may also reach out to you by email and on the rare occasion, a phone call.
First I want to be clear that you can reach out to me anytime you want or need to. Having said that, here are a few good reasons for you to contact me:
You can't figure out what you should be doing (we can talk about strategies to help you avoid this).
You need help understanding how to use the study guide.
You would like to ask a question about your grade or Specifications Grading.
You need clarification of or don't understand a concept.
You want to discuss your progress and/or how to reach your desired grade.
You feel like you need something to help get you back on-track but aren't sure what.
Really, I'm sure there are more reasons but these come to mind first. Remember I am here to help you achieve your academic and personal goals, so do not hesitate to contact me for any reason.
This is a fully face-to-face class, which means that we get to meet in-person twice a week! I am excited about that because I believe that there are 2 components to learning:
Academic success can be defined as the grade that you earn in my class, as well as how that contributes to your overall academic goals (e.g. earning your degree, transferring to a 4 year university, career advancement, etc.). In my class, your academic success will be evaluated in the form of the following:
Chapter Quizzes
Reflection Assignments
Video Tutorial Worksheets
Class Activities
This component is extremely important to you and it is also extremely important to me, and I promise that I will provide you with the resources and support to help you achieve this,
Personal growth, as defined by me, is the impact that the experience of learning in my class has on how you think, feel, and act. This is the often overlooked component of learning that has been displaced by the other component (academic success).
The reality is that 1 year from now, most of the academic success (i.e. the details of what you learned) will be forgotten, unless you have continued to review and study them, according to the American Federation of Teachers article titled Ask the Cognitive Scientist: Do students remember what they learn in school?
However, the experience of learning together, listening to each other's experiences and perspectives, and reflecting on where we individually fit into those communities, and how we see ourselves, cannot be measured through tests and assignments. It can only be evaluated and observed internally, by you, during our time together and beyond. I want to emphasize that this, for me, is the most valuable component of learning and every aspect of this class, especially the in-person time, will contribute to your personal growth!
