Hello! I am your professor for Anthropology 300, Biological Anthropology. As an anthropologist, I am so excited to be able to share my passion with you. I hope you find this field as fascinating as I do-- and even if you don’t want to be an anthropologist, I hope you enjoy learning about humans, including our biology, our closest animal relatives, the primates, and our evolutionary history. I am available to you, and encourage you to reach out to me if you have any concerns, questions or comments during the semester.
Sincerely,
Amanda Paskey, Professor of Anthropology
P.S. This syllabus overview is designed to be mobile-friendly and provide you with essential information to support you with a successful start in this course. This syllabus is provided as a website so you can easily access it from your smartphone. I encourage you to bookmark it on your phone so it's easy to find and reference when you need it. However, it is not a complete syllabus-- which you will get in Canvas, during our first week of class. The complete, printable syllabus, will be available within Week 1's class orientation.
While some courses are self-paced, this course follows a weekly schedule and is facilitated by -- a real person! Each week you'll interact with your classmates in weekly discussions, and complete a series of activities and assignments. The weekly schedule allows us to learn from one another, and it keeps everyone on a path towards achieving our learning goals.
The course has 4 content units, which will be covered over 16 weekly modules. Each weekly module opens officially on Monday (although I make them available the previous Saturday!) and lasts 1 week.
Schedule 1 hour each Monday to log in, review the module and assignments, take note of due dates, and plan your week.
Plan to log in to the course often enough to complete each week's assignments, which are due on Sundays at 11:59pm.
My preferred communication method is the Canvas Conversations tool (from our course, select 'Inbox' in the Global Navigation menu).
Alternatively, you may email me directly at:
If you contact me Monday-Thursday, I will respond within 24 hours. Communication received between Friday and Sunday will be answered Monday morning (as long as it is not a holiday).
The Q&A discussion forum in our class is a great place for general course-related questions. Your classmates might even answer you there! If your question is personal in nature, please send it directly to me through the Canvas inbox.
What is appropriate for the Q&A? Questions pertaining to the course (where do I find that, can you provide more info about this topic, something isn't working properly, etc.)
What is not appropriate for the Q&A? Questions pertaining to your personal situation (keeping us informed about your needs, extension requests, etc.). These questions should be sent to me directly using the Canvas inbox.
