Jazz Band is an extra-curricular activity where students play music in all styles other than traditional band class. In Jazz Band, students learn the skill of improvisation and play music in pop, rock, funk, latin, swing, blues, afro-cuban, country, and many more! This is also the band where students have an opportunity to play piano, electric guitar, bass guitar, and drum set.
We will have our first rehearsal/meeting on Tuesday, December 9th from 3:20-4:20 PM in the band room. Jazz Band will run once a week after-school on Tuesdays from December until April. We will perform a Jazz Concert for families on Tuesday, April 7th at 7PM in the Multi-Purpose Room at RMS. Students that are involved in a winter sport or another activity are still able to participate in Jazz Band. We are almost always able to work out a schedule with coaches and other club advisors when students have conflicts.
This year we will have two different Jazz Band groups: JAZZ 1 and JAZZ 2. Both groups will meet on Tuesdays after-school. JAZZ 1 will meet in Room 51 (Area 51) and JAZZ 2 will meet in the band room. JAZZ 1 is intended for students that want an extra challenge and are ready to play music with an increased level of musical skill. JAZZ 2 is open to everyone in band regardless of prior experience. In order to be considered for membership in JAZZ 1, students must complete a short audition in person on Tuesday, December 9th at our first rehearsal. This audition is meant to take only 3-5 minutes and would be performed in Room 51 (Area 51). The audition material is available on Schoology and there are copies available in the band room for students to take, if interested. There is no audition needed for students intending to be a part of JAZZ 2.
We hope to see your student come and be a part of Jazz Band this school year!
