Do you like playing your instrument? Do you want to play more challenging music? If so, consider being a part of Minnesota Junior Winds! This group rehearses on Sunday afternoons from 3:00-4:30 pm and 4:30 - 6pm right here at RMS! This is an exceptional group that consists of other 7th-12th grade musicians from all over the Twin Cities. Auditions are open now for any instrument.

The Minnesota Band Directors Association (MBDA) 6th-8th Grade All-State Honor Band is an incredible experience for students that wish to push themselves to their highest level of musicianship. Students that are looking for that extra challenge should absolutely go for this AMAZING experience! Students will record an audition consisting of 3 scales and two etudes. Audition music for the current year is available in the band office from any of the band directors. Auditions are recorded here at RMS at the end of November. If selected for this group, students will attend a weekend away at a school in Minnesota in April. There will be a day full of rehearsal (and FUN!) and then a concert performance that same weekend. This year the MBDA 6th-8th Grade Honor Band weekend will be held at Buffalo HS on April 24th -25th, 2027.

Students that are looking for that extra challenge should absolutely go for this AMAZING experience! Students will record an audition consisting of two etudes, three scales, and improvisation. If selected for this group, students will attend a rehearsal in January at a school in Minnesota. There will be a day full of rehearsal (and FUN!) and then an informal performance that same weekend. This year the MBDA 7th-8th Grade Honor Jazz rehearsal/performance will be held on Saturday, January 23rd, 2027 at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. There will also be another performance at the MMEA Music Educators Conference on Friday, February 19th, 2027 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Students from each District 196 middle school are selected to participate in an annual honor band in March. Students are selected by their band directors based on their lesson preparedness and performance, participation in extra-curricular opportunities, and their overall contribution to RMS Band.
This year this honor band will be held on Friday, March 5th 2027 at Eastview High School. There will be rehearsal throughout the day and a performance that same evening. Students get the opportunity to work with a guest conductor from a college or university. Past conductors have included Dr. Haberman (Concordia College - Moorhead, MN), Dr. Brooks Dinh (Winona State University), and Dr. McCann (University of Minnesota).
