Units of Study

In 5th grade we focus on seven units of study throughout the year. The goal is to teach students how to find resources related to each unit, write and read across the units, and gain surface knowledge of each subject area that is built on previous years in the same units. It is important that students extend themselves by challenging their own learning throughout the year. Student's are encouraged, but not required, to do self assigned homework in each unit.

Self assigned homework is an opportunity for each student to create posters, slide shows, and other presentations on areas within the units that spark interest. For example, if we are studying ecosystems, and a student is interested in learning more about coral reefs, the student could do an in depth study on the coral reefs off of Australia and create a presentation for the class - becoming the expert of the day. It is exciting to see all the great information and creativity each expert brings to the classroom each day!
