Overview (1A):

 Unit 1 is broken into two parts Unit 1A and Unit 1B. Unit 1A focuses on multiplying multi-digit whole numbers by 1- and 2-digit numbers. Your child will work on developing the ability to multiply efficiently and accurately using the standard multiplication algorithm. Throughout this unit, your child will multiply whole numbers to solve word problems. Unit 1 also focuses on dividing using a 1 and 2 digit divisor. We will divide whole numbers to solve word problems and discuss remainders. In this unit students will also match 2-step expressions to real-world situations.

Goal for your student:

Our goal for multiplication mastery is for students to be able to use the standard algorithm to multiply a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number. However, we also use partial products and area model strategies. These strategies help build a strong number sense and understanding of why the algorithm works! For division your child will focus on the "Big 7" strategy to start and then move into using the standard algorithm. Our goal for division mastery is using standard algorithm.
