Happy New Year ( I know it is a little late). I hope you all had a great and restful vacation. I have been out for a few weeks due to myself getting COVID and then my son being hospitalized in Portland. Things are getting back on track now. I am all healed and my son is making progress towards healing.

I have made a few changes for the new year which you will notice if you click on the link " weekly homework" above. I will begin putting the spelling lists and the math homework on this site. I can't link the math homework since it is printed off and given to the students during math. If you have a day when your child has forgotten the math homework at school, you can have them go onto their IReady account from a computer at home and complete the assignment that I have assigned them on their learning path. This does not need to be done with the paper home work, however, students are encouraged to study their multiplication facts weekly. Many of the students are really struggling with multiplication facts, which is needed for the math we are doing.

We had a body safety class today which talked about appropriate body touches. Your children may want to talk about this with you.

Upcoming events;

We are doing DRA's next week

We are doing IReady math testing on January 23rd and 24th next week. Please make sure that your kiddos are well rested and have a healthy breakfast.

Thank you for all you do!

Michelle

12/6/23

I hope you all had a great and restful Thanksgiving!

I will start posting our spelling words for the week on here. These will be under the heading "Spelling list by week." Please be aware that some students have different Spelling lists.  I will put both lists up here. One will be under Regular spelling list

Dear Parents & Guardians,

We are sending this letter home to update you on what your child has been working on.

Science:  We have not started science yet.  We will be using Mystery Science this year.  The different units that we will be hoping to cover this school year are Birth of Rocks, Human Machines, Waves of Sound, and Energizing Everything.

Social Studies:  We have started off with our mapping unit.  We are learning about the compass rose, the equator, 7 continents, 4 oceans, the four different hemispheres and different types of maps.

Math:  We have started the year off with a place value unit.  We have talked about the difference between a digit and a number and that digits make up a number. We are talking about different place value positions (up through millions), and the value of a digit in a specific place. We are working on comparing numbers, ordering numbers, and writing numbers in the three different forms (standard, expanded, and word).  We are also working on rounding numbers to different place values.

Reading:  We are using a new reading program this year, I-Ready. Our first unit is what skills can people use to solve a mystery. We will also focus on how to write a summary.

Writing:  We are working on the narrative unit in our Lucy Calkins program.  Students will be working on writing a small moment writing piece.

Spelling:  We started with our no excuse words.  There are 50 of them.  These are the words that we expect fourth graders to be spelling correctly in all of the work that they do.  We have now moved into our regular spelling program.  eir spelling words.   Students will be assessed at the end of each week over 10 of the 20 words and they not only need to know how to spell them, but they also need to know what they mean because students are being asked to use the correct spelling of the word in a sentence accurately.  Students will not know which 10 of the 20 words that they are being tested over, so they need to learn them all.

English/Language:  Students are working hard on nouns and verbs.

Handwriting:  We have started off with manuscript (print) practice. I am encouraging students to really focus on this and make sure that they are forming their letters correctly.  I also have reminded them that this should carry over into any of the written work that they do.  Once we finish with our manuscript practice, we will move into practicing with our cursive handwriting.

Hello families,

We have been practicing new rules and routines for the first couple of weeks. These include lining up in ABC order, participating in morning meeting, bathroom expectations, and many more. Students are in the process of taking a math and reading diagnostic assessment on Chromebooks. They will soon be able to work on individual lessons based on their diagnostic performance. Our first math unit is all about place value and will begin next week. The writing topic for the first trimester is small moment narratives. We will begin the year with social studies, learning about maps and globes.

Hello families,

We are continuing to work on rules and routines this week. The students are being introduced to the structure of our Reading and Math class. We are practicing Start over this week. There was a handout on this available at open house. Start over is used to rethink a bad choice and choose to make a better one.  We practice this so that students can see that it is not a big deal.

Do you want to get involved with PTO? If so, there is a meeting this Thursday at 5:30 in the library.

If you have not turned in your paperwork yet, please do so by Friday! If you already have, then thank you!

Thanks for being awesome!!!

Mrs. Roderick
