Second year Latin students will first complete an extensive review of grammar learned in the first year. They will then proceed to study intermediate Latin grammar and to build more vocabulary. The course is rounded out with an in-depth study of English word building, based on analysis and decoding of Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Emphasis will also be placed on modern medical and legal uses of Latin. Translation work and cultural study will focus on historical heroes or villains of Rome as well as the expansion of Rome power from Romulus and the seven kings through the Republic to the early Empire. Completion of this course provides the minimum college admissions requirements for language study, although not all of the standards for Maine State Parameters for Essential Learning.
Prerequisite - Successful completion of Latin I. One year; 1 credit.
The Latin II Course Outline can be found on the Waterville Senior High School's Atlas program.
