Book Club
Our book club is currently reading Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine by Lara Sheehi and Stephen Sheehi! Below is the full meeting schedule.
Deeply influenced by Frantz Fanon and engaged with decolonial and liberatory praxis, this book "platforms the lives, perspectives, and insights” of Palestinian mental health professionals as they practice in occupied Palestine. A transformative read, Psychoanalysis Under Occupation “locates clinical practice within an openly political framework" (Eihnorn). It offers a depthful representation of the "complexity of Palestinian culture, politics, and the Palestinian people’s psychosocial experience of coloniality” (Hollander). It disrupts the myths, misinformation and dehumanization that have been thrust onto Palestinians as a means of erasing their reality and justifying their oppression.
Primarily discussed through client and clinician experiences, this book engages deep questions about therapeutic work in colonized contexts: the power of shared cultural context & understanding, inseparability of political reality and mental health, relationship to land, language and cultural lifeways, and disrupting oppression in the mental health field.
Even if you cannot read all the chapters, please feel free to come to the meetings. Supplemental material like videos, short articles, and interviews will be shared ahead of each session, as alternative ways to engage and be a part of discussion. This book club is open to Antioch Students, with a focus on students in AU's therapy/counseling programs. For safety reasons, meetings will not be recorded.
