myDRE Basics
myDRE is a platform for digital research workspaces.
A workspace is similar to an office space in a building and with our services, your organization can create spaces in your own building for specific purposes that are only accessible to invited individuals.
The guiding principle here is role-based empowerment.
Each office is suited for combining, preparing and analyzing data. For this, you have both storage and compute available. You can also invite others to your workspace - whether those are your internal colleagues, or external partners from all over the world.
As a myDRE user, you can be part of multiple workspaces at a time: it depends on which ones you've been invited to, and which ones you've requested yourself. There are also workspaces from other medical centers and institutions. With the same myDRE account, you can also be invited to those, for instance when you participate in a multicentre study. myDRE is one connected platform, with many workspaces across multiple organizations.
Let's go into a bit more detail about these workspaces.
Within every workspace, there is storage and compute available. For storage there are file shares and blob containers. These are locations where you can upload and store your datasets, analysis scripts, results, and more.
To work on these stored files, you can have one, or two, or even up to 11 Virtual Machines(VM) in your workspace. A VM, as it's usually called, works in almost the same way as a regular computer. Although it is not physically present on your desk, you can still turn it on, off, and work with it in the same way as you're used to. The VMs can run Windows and Linux.
Both, the storage and the VMs, are located in the Azure cloud from Microsoft. The resources reside within Azure subscriptions associated with your institution. These resources are by default located in the Western European data center in the Netherlands.
As mentioned before, others can be invited to a workspace - whether they are internal colleagues or external partners. New members are assigned a role, which determines what they can and cannot do in that particular workspace. In a later video, we elaborate on these workspace roles.
On the VMs in your workspace, you can use the software of your liking, Python, R/RStudio, Office. You can also install other apps from our application manager, or bring in your own software, such as SPSS, SAS.
An important aspect of the workspaces and their included data is that they are private and protected, ensuring that you can work in compliance with rules and regulations for medical research.
On the next chapter you will see a demo on how to use myDRE.
