Beloved Fraters and Sorors,

What is alchemy?

We have seen a great many discussions around alchemy among online Rosicrucians in recent months that refer to mysterious rituals and symbology. But what do all those rituals, symbology and resulting inner experience do for us?

The ancient alchemists spoke of turning lead into gold. But if we look closer, they weren't really doing that. In fact, if they had succeeded in turning base metals into gold, gold would have become so common that it would have become worthless, simply because the supply would easily have exceeded the demand.

No, the alchemists were speaking metaphorically. Any alchemical transformation must be accomplished on and in ourselves! As mystics, we know that. We joined the Rosicrucian tradition to improve our own personalities, to grow ourselves.

What have been the fruits of this transformation? We learned that transformation is not a single event. It's an ongoing process that takes us to ever deeper levels of knowledge, experience and well-being!

And if we look also at the principle “As Above, So Below,” we can observe how our enlightened thoughts and habits have also improved our physical lives, and the lives of those around us. The more we improve ourselves, the easier our physical, objective existence has become!

Think how much we have improved our consciousness over the past decades, and then think of how much further we could go. Our entire existence in this world could be an exciting, constantly improving experience, if we wanted it to be.

And because a very few are so thoroughly dedicated to improving themselves and the lives of those around them, our entire culture benefits, not just the mystics. Think what our lives would be like if everyone contributed at the level of the few leaders we have in this world!
