In addition to concert band, students can participate in our robust jazz program in grades 7-12. The high school has two jazz bands based on ability level, Jazz I and Jazz II, that meet as a class during the school day. At AJH, students can participate in Comet Jazz, which meets after school. Our Jazz Bands perform at concerts, festivals, and community performances like our annual Night of Jazz.
Steele Jazz Band I, under the direcrtion of Angela Cresap, participated in the Tri-C JazzFest DownBeat Education Day at the Tri-C campus in downtown Cleveland. The legendary Count Basie Orchestra served as the guest artists in residence, serving as adjudicators and clinicans for Jazz Band I's performance, leading workshops on improvisation, and performing live! Students had the opportunity to join the orchestra on stage for the final number. Throughout the day, students connected personally with members of the Count Basie Orchestra, gaining insight into careers in music. Students also toured Tri-C and learned more about its degree programs in the arts.
