Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration
Explanation of the guiding question or concept
Inquiry Statement: How can layering, color blending, and composition choices transform an everyday object into a compelling and realistic work of art?
Inquiry Writing: As a child, I came into contact with a sketch similar to colored pencils. By shaping shadows and highlights, this painting method could make the things on the paper come alive. By using the superimposition and mixture of different colors, it could be made closer to the level that can be seen with the naked eye. (50 words)
Section 2: Connections
Cultural, historical, and artistic influences with critical evaluation.
Selected Reference Image
Written Reflection:
I took three photos from different angles. They had different shadows, and the candies were scattered or clustered. Each candy had two shadows in the photo I chose: dark and light. This was caused by the light from the room and the flashlight on the phone converging onto the candies from two different directions. This rather special light attracted me, so I finally picked this picture. (58 words)

Section 3: Investigate
Visual evidence of material tests, alternate compositions, sketches.
Primary Color Value Scale
Secondary Color Value Scale
Sphere Practice Sheet
Gummy Bear Practice
From the primary and secondary color value scale, I realize the change from dark to light in color. Dark colors don't necessarily have to be black, but we can use indigo blue, violet, and dark green as substitutes instead. When I drew the sphere practice sheet, I experienced the superimposition and gradation of colors. When applying the color, I can repeat it, but be careful not to apply it too forcefully. The last gummy bear practice is a hard challenge for me because I can't smoothly transition between the dark area and the light area. (95 words)
Section 4: Create
Visual documentation of steps of creation

Day 4
Day 5
On the first day, I used the grid method to outline the shapes of these candies with a pencil, and then filled them in with colors. The teacher taught us how to correctly draw shadows in dark colors, and also instructed us not to color the highlights. During this process, I made many revisions repeatedly, and gradually my work began to come to life. Each candy seemed to be presented right before my eyes. (74 words)
Section 5: Final Artwork
Final work
Size: 20cm/20cm
Date of Completion: 03/10/2025
Medium: Pencil and Prisma Color Colored Pencil on Drawing Paper
Why: I want to explore how colors change under different lighting conditions and shadows.
Section 6: Communicate and Reflect
Challenges, successes, and self-evaluation of how the artwork aligns with the inquiry question.
From shooting to drawing, I think that when arranging the candies, although the main candy (the lollipop) stood out, the overall design lacked beauty. Secondly, when drawing the shadows of the lollipops, I didn't understand the teacher's instructions, so I drew the shadows in red. However, the overall shaping of the small candies was still good, highlighting the three-dimensionality and authenticity. From the practice of transforming from sphere to gummy bear practice to the final presentation of the work, from being unfamiliar to becoming proficient, during this process, I have grown a lot. Not only have I mastered a new skill, but I have also exercised my patience because even after multiple coverings of colors, some areas still couldn't achieve the effect I wanted. So in this unit, there were both shortcomings and progress. I hope to continue growing on the long road of painting in the future. (148 words)
