Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration
Explanation of the guiding question or concept
Inquiry Statement: How can printmaking be used to explore and express aspects of my culture in a visually powerful way?
Writing:
Section 2: Connections
Cultural, historical, and artistic influences with critical evaluation.
The type of printmaking she uses is woodcut, kept plain so the subjects are striking. Most of her artworks are about nature in a single color or color of the same hue, but they are creative and full of detail. By utilizing the shapes of nature, her works can convey silence and peace.
In this artwork, she uses only two colors: black lines on a blue background. The trunk and branches are created with varied lines, making the work vivid and impactful. Some areas are fully filled with black, adding realism while maintaining a creative style.
Section 3: Investigate
Visual evidence of material tests, alternate compositions, sketches.
Texture Text
Before creating the final artwork, I tried to draw many different items and textures, experimenting to see which texture would be more suitable for my work. For example, I experimented with a lantern. I really liked the texture of it. However, since there wasn't enough space in my final paper to place it, if I made it smaller, the detailed patterns wouldn't be visible. So in the end, I had to give up on it.
Section 4: Create
Visual documentation of steps of creation
Day 1
Day 3
Day 2
Day 4
Most of the creative process went smoothly, but on the fourth day when the work was nearly completed, I thought there were too many blank areas in the picture, and I didn't know how to add details. After searching through a lot of materials, an image of the sky from one of the works gave me inspiration, so I incorporated the sky into the subsequent creation.
Section 5: Final Artwork
Title: Urban Life
Size: 23/30.5cm
Date of Completion: 26/3/2025
Section 6: Communicate and Reflect
Challenges, successes, and self-evaluation of how the artwork aligns with the inquiry question.
Reflection Notes: In this unit, I explored pen drawing and different perspectives, which made me learn many new and interesting drawing skills, to make the final artwork more realistic. During the drawing process, I pay closer attention to details than usual because I'm using only one color pen. After finishing my final work, I realized that this unit taught us how to build a bridge between reality and imagination.
