Ernesto M. Hernández

Ernesto M. Hernandez was the first Mexican national to be appointed President and Managing Director and President of the Board of Directors of General Motors de Mexico (GMM). He held this position from 2011 to 2019 and, after 40 years of service, he retired from General Motors in January 2020.


General Motors has more than 84 years of operations in Mexico and provides direct employment to 20,000+ people. With headquarters in Mexico City and administrative, engineering, manufacturing and warehousing facilities in the States of Mexico, Coahuila, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi, Hernandez had responsibility for meeting multiannual Business Plan and P&L Objectives for both the GMM Legal Entity and the GMM National Sales Company. During his tenure as President, he was responsible for managing the GM operations in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.


Under Hernandez’s leadership, GM de Mexico became the largest and most admired automotive company in Mexico, according to ranking and recognitions granted by different business, media, corporate reputation, and social responsibility independent organizations.


Prior to this position, Ernesto was Vice President of General Motors de Mexico and Executive Director of Sales, Service and Marketing. He held this position since 2003, successfully leading the commercial operations of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac brands, maintaining a close relationship with dealers, in Mexico and 21 countries in Central America and the Caribbean.


Ernesto began his career in General Motors de Mexico in 1980. Over the years he held numerous positions in Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Planning, Program Management, Vehicle Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, both in Mexico and in the USA. Ernesto has a life-long record of professional achievements yielding significant contributions to GM’s bottom line.


He serves in different Chambers of Commerce and Business Councils and is also an independent director in the Board of Directors of different companies, including Constellation Brands with headquarters in Victor, New York, and DINE, Grupo KUO, and Coproracion Zapata, with headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico.


Ernesto holds a BSC degree in Mechanical Engineering by the Instituto Politecnico Nacional, a MBA degree by the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico, where he graduated with highest honors, and a MSc degree in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds post graduate and executive education diplomas from different institutions, like Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, in Mexico, and Kettering University, Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard Business School, in the USA.
