SAT/ACT
The ACT and SAT are standardized tests that many colleges use as part of the admissions process. Most schools consider your highest score from a single test date, but don’t be afraid to send scores from different test days—colleges often look at your best performance. And here’s some good news for those who don’t feel confident in test-taking: many colleges are now test-optional. That means you can still apply without submitting scores, though some schools may still require them for specific programs or scholarships.
When starting the college prep journey, students and parents often ask:
Is the ACT easier than the SAT?
Do colleges prefer one over the other?
The truth is, both exams test similar academic skills and are accepted equally by colleges across the country. The main differences? The ACT includes a dedicated Science section, while the SAT has one Math section where calculators aren’t allowed. Colleges don’t prefer one over the other, so it’s a good idea to explore both and choose the one that plays to your strengths.
PSAT
The PSAT serves as both a valuable preview of the SAT and a pathway to potential scholarships. High-scoring students may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
PSAT results from the October exam will be delivered electronically. Students can expect an email containing a personalized link and access code to view their score report. A brief video will also be available to help interpret the results.
Beyond test preparation, PSAT scores can open the door to academic honors. Each year, around 1.5 million students across 22,000 high schools take the PSAT. From this group, approximately 16,000 earn National Merit Semifinalist status, and an additional 34,000 receive Commended recognition. Semifinalists are typically announced in September.

The TSIA2 (Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0) is a series of placement tests required for students enrolling in public colleges and universities in Texas, including community colleges. As part of the Texas Success Initiative, students must demonstrate college readiness in reading, writing, and math. Those who do not meet the required benchmarks must take developmental courses in college to build the skills needed for academic success.
At Alvord High School, students take the TSIA2 to qualify for dual credit courses through Weatherford College. Ms. Kelly offers multiple testing dates throughout the school year, and students can sign up directly with her. The first three attempts are free of charge. Additional attempts through the school cost $15 each.
If the scheduled dates do not work with your availability, you may take the TSIA2 at the Weatherford College Wise County Testing Center for a fee of $25.
