SEL Lessons
Lessons Coming Soon
Each round of counseling lessons throughout the year will focus on the Formative Five character traits of successful people. The idea of the Formative Five comes from the book The Formative Five: Fostering Grit, Empathy, and Other Success Skills Every Student Needs by Thomas R. Hoerr.
Formative Five:
Self - Control
This character trait is all about learning how to control ourselves. I like to teach an easy way to remember what we have control of called Mrs. Benbrook's 3 B's of Self-Control: Body, Brain, and Behavior.
Integrity
This character trait is all about learning to do the right thing even when no one is watching. I like to tell the students that if you wouldn't want your mom, grandma or teacher to hear you or see you make the choice, then it probably isn't showing integrity. Honesty is a big part of inegrity too.
Empathy
This character trait is my favorite because it is all about Kindness. When we are able to put ourselves in another person's shoes, it allows us to understand others' feelings and be more kind.
Diversity
This trait is all about learning we are all different and it is a beautiful thing to be different. When we come togeher with our unique, individual selves, we paint a beautiful world.
Perseverance
This trait is all about learning to keep going evenhough obstacles come our way. It doesn't mean that the path will always be easy, but when we are determined, we will reach our goals.
