Grooming refers to sexual harassment by an adult toward someone under 18 years old via the internet. Offenders usually pretend to be peers and build relationships through social networks, chats, forums, instant messaging services, etc. They ask about interests and tastes and try to gain trust so that the victim sends photos, activates the webcam, or even meets up. Often, once the victim starts suspecting or refuses to comply, the harasser uses the information they have to blackmail them. Common threats include: “If you don’t do it, I’ll tell your parents what you’ve been doing.”
