National Honor Society for Dance Arts: Orem High Chapter

The National Honor Society for Dance Arts™ (NHSDA) is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance in public and private schools in K-12 education, dance studios, cultural/community centers, performing arts organizations, and post-secondary education.

Orem High dancers have the opportunity to apply for induction based on artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement. Student Induction is a lifetime recognition and NHSDA designations remain with the student’s record–they can be used on transcripts, resumes, portfolios, and applications. Members will have additional opportunities throughout the year, as well as more options for scholarships, mentorship, and networking. They will also receive a pin for graduation.

NHSDA Goals

-To promote a desire for life-long learning in the field of dance.

-To encourage an understanding of, and an appreciation for, dance as an art form and develop knowledgeable audiences for tomorrow.

-To identify honor students (grades 11 & 12) for nomination to the NDEO Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award, one of the highest honor programs for dance in the United States.

Eligibility

Induction into NHSDA is earned through the accumulation of at 30 points awarded for dance activities such as dance classes, rehearsals, performances, research, workshops, or community service activities, alongside a minimum GPA of at 3.5.

Students should track their points and provide the Chapter Sponsor (Ms. Alley) with a record of their earned points. For points earned outside of chapter activities, verification of points earned should be provided to the Chapter Sponsor through playbills, registration forms, photos, or other agreed-upon methods. The Chapter Sponsor will keep a record of points earned on file. In addition, the prospective student’s demonstration of collaborative teamwork, motivation, and leadership in the many aspects of dance (e.g., choreography, performance, mentoring, production) are factors in the determination of eligibility for induction.

Once you have tracked your points, turn in the worksheet to Ms. Alley and formally apply for induction at nhsda-ndeo.org/studentapplication.

Students who have been inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) Secondary Program and are current juniors and seniors in High School are eligible for the NDEO Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award, the highest student dance award in the nation. The National Winner of the award will receive up to a $1000 scholarship and a certificate. There will also be National Finalists and Honorable Mention Recipients.

The current year application will be available in late October.

Deadline to Apply: January--see the website for more details.
