Welcome to 6th grade math.
The requirements for math HW each night and math procedures in class are as follows:
- The point of the homework is to stretch the students to learn. UNLESS IT IS A REVIEW FOR A TEST we ask that parents allow students to struggle through the homework on their own.
- Each child MUST spend at least 20 minutes working diligently to discover as much as they can about the homework problems (the ACT portion of each section).
- Each child MUST try ALL the problems--We try to give problems that should only take about 20 minutes in all, but if a concept is more difficult for you, it may take you a little longer. Please don't just give up! We want you to challenge yourself. That is the only way to truly learn!!
- Don't spend more than 30 minutes! Give it your best go, but we don't want math hw to suck your life away! If you have worked really diligently to try your best and learn for 30 minutes, you have completed the assignment.
- Remember the point of the homework is to stretch yourself! Actually challenge yourself to learn, DON'T JUST GIVE UP!!!
- Students cannot pass "math effort" with a 3 if work is not shown
Play Prodigy to fill up Math Time
- If you complete the problems and haven't put in AT LEAST 20 min, you can do either of the following:
- Use the extra time to practice math through prodigygame.com/play. (This is a safe math based computer game that focuses on topics we’ve covered in class). If you don’t have access to a computer at home, you can make up the practice time at school.
- Make up some problems to practice
- Tests are graded on a mastery level. In each concept, a student may receive a 1 (not proficient), 2 (approaching proficient), or 3 (proficient).
- Retests will be offered near the end of each term for students to improve mastery of a concept
- If more opportunities are needed, please talk to your teacher
- If a student would like to retest prior to the end of the term, they are required to complete at least 5 problems practicing the concept of the test on their own time. When they turn in those practice problems, they will have the opportunity to retest within the next 2 days.
- If you are struggling with any concepts, please talk to your teacher. It is our goal to help you learn. Don't hesitate to get help!
As you/your child works through math this year, keep in mind 6th grade math is intense! The 6th grade content pushes students to stretch their mathematical thinking. Math this year will be challenging for most students (even if math has always come naturally in the past). Because of this, many students experience a mathematical struggle. Embrace it! This struggle challenges kids beyond what they thought they were capable of and stretches them to achieve more than they thought possible. The beginning of the year may seem incredibly tough, but hang in there! As we continue, things will begin to click, they will make more and more sense. We promise that as each child commits to put in their best effort we will not let them fail.
Do not fear the challenge, remember, the night is always darkest before the dawn.
