American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women in the United States are two to three times more likely to die of pregnancy or birth complications than non-Hispanic white women. Maternal Mortality Review Committees have the potential to prevent AIAN maternal mortality by identifying factors that place women at risk throughout their life course. The Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council (RMTLC) contracted with Allyson Kelley and Associates PLLC (AKA) in October 2023 to conduct an environmental scan and feasibility review of a Tribal Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) in Montana and Wyoming. These efforts aimed to document the current and emerging maternal mortality needs of Tribal members in Montana and Wyoming.
This page includes four documents developed from the RMTLC/AKA partnership:
Tribal MMRC Scan of Practices, Approaches, and Considerations,
Tribal MMRC Survey Results,
Tribal MMRC Feasibility Review Findings, and
Maternal Child Health and Tribal MMRCs Model.
