We have been on a journey since October 2023 to explore the role of maternal mortality review committees (MMRCs) and what happens when an American Indian mother dies. In Phase 1, we reviewed published reports and the social conditions that contribute to deaths. Phase 2 continued the journey with stories from elders about Grandfamilies and grief and loss practices. Tribal MMRC members shared their perspectives about state MMRCs and opportunities in tribal communities to prevent deaths. Focusing on the strengths and culture, we conceptualized the Forest of Resilience, a metaphor for healing communities and creating conditions where every life is sacred, protected, and cared for. We are currently implementing Phase 3 of the project, which includes interviewing elders and creating a toolkit for tribes to address grief and loss resulting from preventable deaths.
